Delphin H. Hohenstein, 97, passed away on February 19, 2017 at Crystal Seasons Assisted Living Center in Lake Crystal, Minnesota.

A memorial service for Delphin will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary, with a visitation one hour prior. Spring interment to follow at Vernon Center Cemetery.

Delphin Henry Hohenstein was born August 26, 1919, to Henry F. and Martha B. (Paap) Hohenstein.

He was baptized September 7, 1919, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Vernon Center, Minnesota, by Pastor Paul Walther and was confirmed in the same church on July 23, 1933, by Pastor Herman Reinhart.

He attended the Oliver School near his home for eight years and went to Weyauwega High School in Wisconsin for one year. His second year of high school was in Garden City, Minnesota.

On February 18, 1941, he volunteered to serve one year in the United States Army, but actually served four and one-half years. Attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, he was in charge of a platoon of combat infantrymen and was twice awarded the bronze star for action above and beyond the call of duty.

On August 19, 1950, he married Carol LaVonne Schutt. He retired from farming in the year 1995. He was very active in volunteering at his church for many years.

Delphin is preceded in death by his wife Carol; great-granddaughter Cora Burkel; and siblings Edna, Viola, Lydia, Maynard, and Norbert.

He will be deeply missed by his children Lesley Hohenstein, Jean Abernathy, Ruth (Roger) Bechel, and Amy (Donald) Starzinski; grandchildren Jennifer (John) Lockner, Jason (Velma) Abernathy, Melissa (William) Burkel, Nathan (Elizabeth) Bechel, Ariel Starzinski, Maren Starzinski, and Alec Starzinski; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials preferred to the Wounded Warrior Project.
