He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1964, serving 4 years on the USS Ticonderoga. After discharge from the Navy, Sonny returned to Mankato and worked for Continental Can until 1976. He was also known to all as a master tinkerer! He could build or fix anything. He loved anything with a motor, especially his classic cars. He was a man of many toys!

Sonny is survived by his wife, Mary of Mankato; two sons, Jason (Jodi) of Madison Lake and Jeremy of Shakopee; grandchildren, Jacob, Joie, and Nicole; great-grandchildren, Laynee and Lily; Sonny and Mary's dog, Annie; grand dog, Axl; four brothers, Donald (Eileen), Al (Mary) and Denny all of Mankato, Peter (Kaysie) of Waterville; three sisters, Ann Malecha of Des Moines, IA, Rosie (Bud) Allen of Eagle Lake, and Carol (Ken) Schlender of Lindstrom; numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
