Dennis E. Johnson, age 86, of Mankato passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at Hillcrest Healthcare Center.
The family is honoring Dennis' wishes by having no formal service. Mankato Mortuary is assisting with arrangements.
Dennis was born January 1, 1927 to Herman and Lavina (Klappenbach) Johnson in Staples, Minnesota. He attended a one room school west of Wadena, Minnesota and later near Brainerd, Minnesota. Following his high school graduation he attended Brainerd Junior College and graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. He received his Master's Degree in rehabilitation counseling at Mankato State in 1964.
Dennis was united in marriage to Donna Monson in 1951 in Grove City, Minnesota.
Dennis proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked for the State Vocational rehabilitation service in Mankato for several years, and was also an instructor in rehabilitation counseling at Mankato State University from 1967-1991.
He was a life member of the National Rehabilitation Association, the Audubon Society, the Sierra Club and the Minnesota Valley Gem and Mineral Club. Dennis was an avid gardener and conservationist. He raised rare and heirloom varieties of potatoes and was a member of the Seed Sauer's Exchange. He looked forward to hunting Morel Mushrooms each spring. Together, Dennis and Donna attended many gem and mineral shows, where they were dealers, and made many lifelong friends. Dennis did extensive research on his family tree, tracing his father's family back to Sweden in the 1600's, and the Klappenbach family to Germany. He also enjoyed auctions and collecting various items. Family was very important to Dennis and he was most proud of his children.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Donna; daughters: Suzanne Johnson of New York City, NY, and Lynnae Glantz of Irvine, CA; three grandchildren; brothers: Lindy Johnson of Little Falls, MN, and Arnie Johnson of Crosby, MN;
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; son, Marc; and brother, Stanley.
The family requests memorials be directed to the Blue Earth and Nicollet County Human Society or to the National Audubon Society.
