Shirley W. Schmidt, age 88, died Friday, March 8, 2013 at Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter, MN.
A funeral service honoring Shirley's life will be held on Monday, March 11, 2013 at 11am in the Northview " North Mankato Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Rev. Scott Olson, officiating. A visitation will begin at 10am until the time of the service on Monday. A private family burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Mankato. Memorials may be given to Grace Lutheran Church, Mankato or the Salvation Army. Northview North Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Shirley was born October 21, 1924 to Wilfred and Marie (Pehrson) Decko in Traverse, MN. She graduated from St. Peter High School in 1942. Shirley worked in Seattle, WA shipyards until the end of WWII, then returned to Minnesota, graduated from Mankato Commercial College and was employed at Mankato Oil Company. Shirley was united in marriage to Howard F. Schmidt on May 15, 1949 at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter, MN. She was an avid coin and doll collector. Shirley lived in the home she shared with Howard in North Mankato from 1951 until her illness in January 2013.
Shirley is survived by her children, Karen (Richard) Neubert of North Mankato, Todd Schmidt of Farmington, MN, and Wendy (Steve) Buckholz of North Mankato; three grandchildren, Nicole Buckholz, Kelly Neubert, and Jack Buckholz; and one great-grandson, Aaron Neubert.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Howard in 1977; her son, Richard in 1960; her parents, and brother, Delmore (Sonny) Decko.
