Jim taught math at Mankato (West) High School for 33 years, beginning in 1960. He interrupted his teaching career in 1968-70 to move with his family to Gainesville, Fla., where he earned a doctorate in education at the University of Florida. In later years, Jim also taught math curriculum and advised student teachers at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., and Minnesota State University.
Jim was born January 30, 1932 in Madison, S.D. His mother, Nadine Bowman Gueffroy, died days after his birth, so his ailing father, Francis Gueffroy, put "Jamie" up for adoption. Jim's birth parents were a deaf couple, the father employed as a linotype operator for the Madison Daily Leader. Jim became the only child of his devoted parents, Albert and Grace Hanneman. Albert worked for his wife's family store, Bray's Furniture.
Jim graduated from Madison High School in 1950 and went on to his hometown college, General Beadle State Teachers College, now Dakota State University. There he met his future wife, Eleanore Schulte of Emery, S.D., who also was studying to be a teacher.
College was interrupted by the Korean War's "college draft" of 1953. Jim was inducted into the Army, doing basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas. He was on a ship headed to Korea when the war ended in July 1953. Jim spent his enlistment stationed in Japan.
Jim returned to college, marrying Eleanore on August 17, 1955 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Farmer, S.D. While Eleanore taught a 3rd/4th grade classroom in Orland, S.D., Jim finished his degree. In August 1956, shortly before the birth of their first child, Jim began a three-year stint teaching at Cleveland High School. There he taught math, general science, physics " and drove the school bus.
Jim then won a National Science Foundation scholarship to earn a master's in mathematics education in 1960 from Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa.
During his years as a math teacher at Mankato/Mankato West, Jim timed and announced wrestling meets, ran Radio Workshop, and taught driver's education. He was active in the MEA and NEA, and inducted into Phi Delta Kappa educators' fraternity. Jim's continuing graduate studies included a 1967 stint as a Shell Merit Fellow at Stanford University.
Jim was an avid and talented photographer, a hobby he pursued devotedly in retirement. His stunning scenery shots include slides he took during a hike up Mount Fuji while in the Army, and Chicago landmarks from a 1951 trip with buddies. Jim took endless candids and portraits of his growing family, and all kinds of fast-action shots of his kids and grandkids and their teammates at athletic games and dance competitions. A big-time baseball fan who took his family to many games " double-headers were the best " Jim also took great photos at Twins games and Vikings preseason workouts.
Inspired by his youngest daughter, Jim took up tennis at age 40, and he played faithfully for 35 years. Not the least of all, Jim passed on his love of corny "math teacher jokes" to most of his sons and grandkids.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Eleanore; dear father of Jeff (Anne Bowhay) Hanneman of Oak Park, Ill., Janine (Rory) Miller of Mankato; Jerilynn (Alonzo) Crowder of Burnsville; Joel (Kim) Hanneman of Phoenix, Ariz., and Judi (Randy) Salo of Sun Prairie, Wis. He was the proud grandfather of 11: Emily, Peter and Jane Hanneman; Brian and Jason Miller; Michael Bailey and Mindy Mallinger; Zak (Courtney) Hanneman; Lindsey, Sydney and Samantha Salo; and two great-granddaughters, Hailey and Jadyn Hanneman.
