Wayne B. Koenen, age 80, of Mankato died Wednesday, February 5, 2014 in New Mexico.
Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church in Mankato with Rev. Chris Conlin, officiating. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 14, 2014 at the church. Private burial will be at a later date. Memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church or Minnesota State University " Mankato Foundation. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Wayne was born August 8, 1933 to Peter and Jenny (Ostendorf) Koenen in George, IA. On September 2, 1955 he was united in marriage to Judy Krull at Washington Reformed Church in Ackley, IA. Wayne earned his PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Iowa and went on to teach at Minnesota State University " Mankato for 25 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian, sang in the choir and served as an elder for many years. Wayne was also a lifetime member of the Retired Educators Association of Minnesota. He was an avid book reader, sports fan, storyteller, joker and enjoyed traveling and camping. Wayne was the most optimistic person Judy ever knew.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judy; sons, Brent (Ellen), Curt (Pam), Bruce (Wendy); 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Justin (Elaine) and Dennis; sisters, Vera Osland, Rita (Dick) VandenOever, Alda (Don) Frey; sister-in-laws, Judy Koenen, Beverly Lupkes, Mavis (Darwin) Kampman; brother-in-law, Eldon (Frances) Krull; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Magdalena and Edward Krull; infant brother, David; brother, Paul; sister, Inez Ketchum; and brother-in-laws, Robert Ketchum, Gerald Osland and Walter Lupkes.
