Rev. Roland A. Gurgel, age 93, of Eau Claire, WI and formerly of Mankato, was taken to be with the Lord, Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Rutledge Assisted Living in Chippewa Falls, WI. Praise be to God.
Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Northview " North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato. Visitation will be held from 11:30-1 Saturday at Northview. A Victory Service will be held at 2:30 Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2015 North Hastings Way, Eau Claire, WI. Burial will be in Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery, Mankato. Memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran College.
Roland A. Gurgel was born October 10, 1920 in Wonewoc, Wisconsin to Herman and Flora (Pohl) Gurgel. He graduated from high school, college, and attended seminary school. He was united in marriage to Lois H. Bauer on October 28, 1945 in Milwaukee. Roland served as Pastor from 1945-1959 in LaCrosse and Rib Lake, WI, New Ulm, and Belle Plaine, MN. Rev. Gurgel and his family moved to Arizona and in 1962 they moved to Wyoming, where he served as pastor in Cheyenne. From 1964-86, Roland was a professor for the high school, college, and the seminary at Immanuel Lutheran College in Eau Claire, WI. Roland retired in 1986 and moved to Mankato. He assisted in several US locations as a vacancy pastor. He was previously a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Eagle Lake and currently had membership at Messiah Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, WI.
Survivors include five daughters and their husbands, Lois and Dennis Wendland of Cottonwood, AZ, Kathleen and Omar Olmanson of Mankato, MN, Ruth and Mark Bernthal of Middleton, WI, Deborah and John Ude of Eau Claire, WI, Bethany and Perry Dauer of Mankato, MN; four sons, Paul Gurgel and wife, Barbara of Eau Claire, WI, John Gurgel and wife, Cathie of Vancouver, WA, Daniel Gurgel of Tampa, FL, Pastor Roland H. Gurgel of Spring, TX; 45 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Picha of Onalaska, WI; sister-in-law, Doris Bauer of Kenosha, WI; nieces and nephews.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois on March 2, 1999; a granddaughter, Heleen; grandsons, Samuel and Micah; three brothers, and two sisters.
