Melvine S. Balbach, age 89, of Kasota, died on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Monarch Meadows in North Mankato.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, February 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Laurer officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Minneopa Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Savior's Music Department or the donor's choice.

Melvine was born on July 30, 1924 to Daniel and Johanna (Oster) Richter on her parent's farm in Monango, North Dakota. She graduated from Monango High School in 1942 and was the valedictorian. She then attended and graduated from Mankato Commercial College in Mankato. Melvine worked for McLean and Kulman Co. as a stenographer. On June 30, 1946, Melvine was united in marriage to Ward E. Balbach at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mankato. She was a homemaker, raising 8 children. Melvine and Ward lived in Mankato until 1996, when they built their retirement home near Lake Washington.

Melvine was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, singing in the choir for over 50 years and ringing for the Bell Choir. She attended Widows to Widowers group after her husband's death. Melvine was also involved in bowling leagues in the Mankato area, including coaching the junior league. She was inducted into the Mankato Area Bowling Hall of Fame in 2011.

Melvine is survived by her daughters, JoAnn Larson of Burnsville, Jane Chatleain of North Mankato, Judy (Lance) Ford of Excelsior, MN, and Julie (Troy) Sonnek of North Mankato; sons, Don (Judy) Balbach of Fridley, MN, Wayne (Denise) Balbach of Kasota, and Kurt Balbach of Mankato; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Bernice Balbach of Springfield, MN; one nephew; two nieces; and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ward; son, Dean; one sister; one brother; three brothers-in-law; and three sisters-in-law.

The family would like to express sincere thanks to the staff at Monarch Meadows and the Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to our mother.
