Memorial Service for Ervin F. Kurth, age 93, of Mankato, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Mankato, with Rev. Paul Lauer, officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the church. A spring burial will take place at Tivoli Cemetery, rural Mankato. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements
Ervin Frederick Kurth was born September 20, 1920 to Otto and Alma (Bach) in Boon Lake, Reville County, Minnesota. Ervin grew up in Hutchinson as the oldest of three children. After high school graduation, Ervin attended St. Olaf College before enlisting in the United States Army. Ervin proudly served our country during WWII, stationed to guard the Panama Cannel. After the war, Ervin worked for the Federal Reserve Bank. Ervin met his wife, Geneva, while working in Billings, Montana. They were married October 24, 1954. Ervin was a man of faith and led by example. He was president of the American State Bank for 26 years.
After "retirement," Ervin was a director for the Merchant State Bank in Lewisville for another 18 years. Favorite past times of Ervin's included curling, golfing and watching his horse, "Erv the Banker" race. His grandchildren were blessed with a grandpa that took an active role in their lives; as he enjoyed following their sporting events and taking them golfing. Ervin always cared for others above himself; he was active member, leader, and contributor to the Mankato community. He is recognized in the community for his leadership contribution in many local and state organizations including his time as treasurer of MSU foundation and a past president of the Mankato Kiwanis Club. In 1997, Ervin was recognized by the MN Bankers Association for his 50 years of dedication and service to the community and state. He was an active member Our Savior's Lutheran Church and denomination, where he and Geneva were members for over fifty years.
After a rich and full life, Ervin F. Kurth died peacefully at the Mayo Clinic Health system in Mankato at the age of 93 years, January 29, 2014.
Ervin will be missed by his children, Craig Kurth of St. Croix Falls, WI, Kim (Alec) Hovick of Dickinson, ND; grandchildren, Nicole, Jacob, and Derek Hovick; sister, Florence Waggoner.
Ervin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Geneva; and brother, Ollie Kurth.
