Richard "Dick" Appel, age 65, of North Mankato, died on Monday, May 12, 2014 at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 16 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery.

Richard was born on November 5, 1948 in Heron Lake, MN to Julius and Joyce (Mullin) Appel. He graduated from Heron Lake High School and from the Mankato Technical Institute with a degree in architectural drafting. Richard served in the United States Army in the 452nd D General Support Company. He was very patriotic and proud of his military service. Dick was united in marriage to Donna Anderson on October 25, 1969 in Dundee, MN. Dick worked for Lloyd Lumber and Patterson Lumber before owning and operating Appel Construction. He then worked for North Star Concrete. Dick built his home and several other homes in North Mankato. He enjoyed woodworking, tinkering, and remote control cars. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and giving them rides on his tractor.

Dick is survived by his wife, Donna of North Mankato; children, Tanya (Ed) Vogel of Janesville, Darla (Dan) Welp of St. Peter, Mathew Appel of Mankato, and Debra (Matt) Mosloski of Fairmont; grandchildren, Dustin Vogel, Tremain Appel, and Devyn and Joey Welp; three brothers, Donovan (Arlene) Appel, James Appel, and Thomas (Kelly) Appel; and aunt, Phyllis Mullin. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, MaryAnn.
