Born April 24, 1930 to Viola and Lester Gilbert in St. Paul, MN she grew up in the Highland Park neighborhood. Jacqueline, or "Jackie" as she preferred, grew up alongside an older brother Lester, a younger brother Jerry and a younger sister Barbara. She attended St. Paul public schools, graduating from St. Paul Central High School in 1948. Following high school, she attended Bethesda Nursing School at Bethesda Hospital, just north of the MN State Capitol. At that time, most nursing schools were run by hospitals, however college credits were also required and that led Jackie to Gustavus Adolphus College. She was assigned six courses in one semester and yet she still found time to find her future husband of 62 years, Gene Dumdei.
Jackie graduated Bethesda in 1951 and passed the RN Boards. Gene graduated Gustavus in 1951 and they were married November 24, 1951 in St. Paul, MN. They moved to Mankato, MN and Jackie became the Head Nurse at the Psychiatric Annex at Immanuel Lutheran Hospital. She left that position upon the birth of her first child, Paula. However, she could not stay away from her calling as a nurse and returned part-time to the OB floor, working night shift to balance work and family. Five sons were to follow - Bruce, Craig, Alan, Scott and Eric. As her family grew, so did her responsibilities at the hospital. She became the part-time Night Supervisor, and eventually the full-time Night Supervisor at the now merged Immanuel-St. Joseph Hospital. Jackie retired from nursing in 1992. At that time, she and Gene were now able to indulge their love of travel. They traveled the US from coast to coast and to Hawaii. Of all the places she saw, she liked Hawaii and the Grand Tetons of Wyoming the best. While life had slowed down for Jackie, she still enjoyed visits from her family; that had grown to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jacqueline is survived by: her brother Jerry of Scotsdale, AZ; her sister Barbie of Denver CO; her children, Paula (and Mike) of Eden Prairie, Bruce (and Karen) of New Lenox, IL, Craig (and Pat) of Mankato, Alan (and Ramona) of South Pasedena, CA, Scott (and Karol) of Sioux Falls, SD, Eric (and Joanne) of Vancouver, BC, Canada; eleven grandchildren, Charles (and Christine), Abby (and Jeremy), Peter, Jeffrey (and Stacey), Lauren, Jacob, Erin, Alex, Brian, Claire, and Sean; and four great-grandchildren, Tanner, Griffin, Weston and Augustus.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her brother, Lester and her husband, Gene (2/17/14).
