Donald Albert "Smitty" Schmidt, age 76 of Mankato, died Friday, April 25, 2014 at his home.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Patrick Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 " 7 p.m., Monday at Mankato Mortuary and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials to the donor's choice.
Don was born July 9, 1937 in New Ulm, Minnesota to Albert and Rose (Fleck) Schmidt. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Kewitsch on August 23, 1960 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in LeCenter. He worked for George Wohlers at LeCenter, Chesley Co. in Mankato. Don then owned his own truck and trailer and hauled grain being leased to Tom Traynor Trucking for 13 years until his retirement.
Don served in the Minnesota National Guard St. Peter, Minnesota from 1956 " 1962 receiving and honorable discharge. He was also a member of Christ the King.
Don enjoyed music and playing drums in a country band for several years. He enjoyed riding motorcycle and took many cross country trips with his wife and many rides with friends. He also enjoyed dancing, going to car and motorcycle shows.
Don is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughter Kay (Ray) Drayfahl of Winnebago; granddaughter, Jessica (Shawn) Carraway; great-grandson, Logan Carraway all from Burnsville; brother, Jim (Jonnie) Schmidt of Kahoka, MO; three sisters, Judy Villwock of Owatonna, MN, Marlys (Ron) Peterson of Mankato, and Kathie Evans of Otsego, MN; in-laws, Ardelle (John) Barten of North Mankato, Allen (Pat) Kewitsch of LeCenter, MN; nieces and nephew.
Preceded in death by son Ken; parents, in-laws, Alden and Edna Kewitsch, Maynard Villwock and Ken Evans.
