Gerald Ewert, age 96 of Mankato, died Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Pathstone Living.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Centenary United Methodist Church, Rev. Michelle Hargrave officiating. A visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and continue until the time of the service. Burial with military honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery in St. Peter. Memorials are preferred to the Centenary United Methodist Choir in Mankato. Arrangements are being handled with Mankato Mortuary.

Gerald John Ewert was born February 9, 1918 in Kasota to Peter and Justina (Bargen) Ewert. He graduated from Kasota High School in 1937 and later attended Mankato Commercial College. He graduated with a degree in accounting. After graduating, he began work at Hubbard Milling Company in April of 1939 and worked there for 40 years, retiring in February of 1980.

Gerald served in the United States Air Force as a cryptographer and spent 3" years in the service at a base in Africa and Naples, Italy. During World War II, he was involved in coding and decoding secret messages which were vital to the campaign in the European Theater. After returning from the service, he married Mabel Nelson on April 20, 1946. Together they were blessed with four children, Stanley, Ross, Paula, and Scott. Mabel passed away on August 11, 1982.

Gerald was active in the Mankato Exchange club for 36 years, eventually retiring from Exchange in 2004. During his years of service in Exchange, he served as Upper Midwest District President in 1979-1980, received an Exchangite Extraordinary Award in 1989, and was named Outstanding Exchangite of the Year for the State of Minnesota in 1994. He was also a member of the Summit Center Chorus, a member of the Blue Prairie Dulcimer Club and a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

On October 7, 1995, he married his present wife, Donna Jean Winter. Jerry and Donna were enthusiastic about Elder Hosteling throughout the United States and Canada. Jerry and Donna both sang in the church choir and also in the local Summit Singers Chorus. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles, golf, woodworking and playing bridge.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Donna; his two sons, Ross of Mankato, Scott (wife, Jennifer) all of Mankato; sister-in-law, Edith Ewert. He is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Mabel; a daughter, Paula; a son, Stanley; and granddaughter, Kathleen Irene; and his ten siblings.

Gerald's family would like to thank the staff of the therapy unit at Pathstone Living and to Hospice for the care and love they gave to Jerry.
