LaVonne C. Craig, age 77, of North Mankato, died on Monday, August 18, 2014 at her home.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 24 at 12:00 p.m. at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary with Rev. Robert Wieber officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday from 4-7 p.m. at Northview. Burial will be in the Center Chain Cemetery south of Fairmont at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the Power Up Clubhouse or the donor's choice.

LaVonne was born on March 8, 1937 in Estherville, IA to John and Julia (Saunders) Schmit. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1954 and attended Mankato State University for two years. On May 1, 1956, LaVonne was united in marriage to Melvin Craig. LaVonne worked at the Minnesota Valley Regional Library from 1983-1997. In November 1996 LaVonne was elected 3rd District Nicollet County Commissioner and served a four year term. She was chair of the Nicollet County DFL for six years and associate chair of the Senate District 24 for four years. She was a past president of the Nicollet County Historical Society. LaVonne was an active member of many organizations: Friends of the Library, Alliance for the mentally ill, MVAC, Mankato Saddle Club, and was involved in 4-H while her children were growing up. LaVonne also helped found the Power Up Clubhouse in St. Peter. She loved animals and reading.

LaVonne is survived by her husband, Melvin; four sons, Richard (Cindy), David (Kindle), Paul (Tracy), and Mike (Kim); four daughters, Julia Craig (Larry Nicol), Ruth Craig, Kathy Craig (Terry Rhodes), and Jane Craig; and grandchildren, Cady, Chloe, Ian, Emily, Brantley, Ryne, Dana, Winter, Sylvie, Matt, Olivia, Henry, and Andrew.
