Rev. Carl Walter William Ziemer Jr., age 67, Mankato, was taken to his heavenly home on Friday, August 15, 2014, at Seasons Hospice Home in Rochester after an eight-month journey with advanced adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.

Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in North Mankato, with Rev. Keith Siverly and Rev. Jim Behringer officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Monday at the church, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Carl was born March 1, 1947, in Marinette, WI, and grew up in Coleman, WI. He was the son of Carl Sr. and Ada (Koepsell) Ziemer. Carl was a 1965 graduate of Northwestern Prep School, Watertown, WI; a 1969 graduate of Northwestern College, Watertown, WI, and a 1973 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon, WI. He was united in marriage to Cheryl Lehman on June 13, 1970, in New London, WI.

Carl served as pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in River Falls, WI from 1973-1983 and Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota from 1983-2002. He was the Director of Special Ministries for the Wisconsin Synod in Milwaukee, WI from 2002 until his retirement in 2012. The summer after his retirement, Carl was privileged to serve as military chaplain for the WELS in Europe. He and Cheryl loved their time traveling and especially meeting the military families served by this ministry. Carl served his Lord for 39 years in active ministry. His passion was serving God's people. He loved being active, enjoyed God's creation and his retirement home where he could spend time woodworking, gardening, being outdoors, and spending time with his family.

Carl is survived by his loving family: wife, Cheryl, Mankato; four children, Tim (Jen) Ziemer of St. Paul, Ben (Becky) Ziemer of Rochester, Katie (Brent) Sexton of Mankato, and Carl (Jess) Ziemer III; eleven grandchildren, Kyle and Griffin Ziemer; Bailey, Phoebe, Abbye, and Micah Ziemer; Carter, Ty, and Blake Sexton; and Justin and Carl Ziemer; one sister, Esther (Harland) Patz of Suring, WI; one brother, Rev. Paul (Donna) Ziemer of Lexington, KY; father-in-law, Lester Lehman of Mankato; and also nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

The family is grateful for the exceptional care Carl received at the Andreas Cancer Center, Mayo Health System Mankato, Mayo Methodist Hospital Rochester, and Seasons Hospice House, Rochester.
