John Reuel Dimmel, age 87, of Mankato, formerly of rural Janesville, passed away Monday, January 13, 2014, at Pathstone Living.

Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 18, 2014, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Alma City (rural Janesville). Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Mankato Mortuary, and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in the Alma City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VINE Faith in Action, Mankato.

John was born December 25, 1926, in St. James to Henry August and Myrtle (Hart) Dimmel. He resided there until 1931 when he moved, with his parents, to a farm southwest of Janesville. John served in WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. He started farming with his father, and farming was his livelihood for 46 years.

On June 17, 1950, he married Marcia Miller of Mankato. The couple lived on their farm in rural Janesville until 2005, when they moved to Mankato. At the time of his passing they had been married 63" years.

Though quiet in demeanor, John's actions spoke volumes. He took pride in his farmland, yard, and garden and his steady care left them productive and weed-free. His nieces, nephews-in-law, and great-nieces and great-nephews learned much about perseverance and hard work from "Uncle Bean." They also appreciated his softer side, which he showed with newborn lambs, his beloved cats and dogs, and family members. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards with friends at the family cabin. His relationship with his wife demonstrated enduring love and respect.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia; sister- and brother-in-law, Sally Miller Kull and William Kull of Corona del Mar, California; nieces and their husbands, Linzee and Paul McCray of Iowa City, Iowa, Marcia Kull and Gary Maher of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Carolyn and Jeff Strandberg of Hong Kong. He is also survived by great-nieces, Maggie McCray, Rebecca McCray, Anna Maher, Lindsey Strandberg and husband, Sean Heyliger; and great-nephews, Karl William Reuel Maher and Russell Strandberg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Herman and Kaye Miller; and two cousins, Sally Stewart and Willard Laase.
