Mary M. Baynes, age 99, formerly of Mankato, died Wednesday, January 1, 2014, at Sterling Park Health Care Center in Waite Park.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 105 N. 5th Street, Mankato, with Rev. Ted Hottinger officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Schola, Good Counsel - SSND, SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, or the donors choice.

Mary was born on November 7, 1914, in North Mankato to William and Katherine (Biedscheid) Bohnert. She was a lifelong member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, where she was baptized, received her First Communion, was Confirmed, and was united in marriage to Scott Baynes on November 13, 1937. They lived on Broad Street most of their married lives, raising their 8 children. Mary was very active in the church, participating in guild, bake sales, and assisting with many other services and activities there. She was known for her fresh baked bread, rolls, and cookies available at bake sales. Daily coffee clutches were held at her kitchen table every morning and the door was always open to welcome a visitor. She always made time for a visit.

Mary was employed at Suttle's Restaurant as a cook, and also at the Mankato Golf Club where her own dessert creation called "Food for the Angels" was a specialty item. She enjoyed her card clubs (playing Pfeffer and 500) with her many friends, crocheting and embroidery (her gift to us as we treasure many of the pillowcases, table runners, and afghans she created), baking and cooking always enticed the neighbors, and most of all she treasured time spent with her family.

Mary is survived by her children, Yvonne (Wilson) Deaton of St. Cloud, Richard (Sherry) Baynes of Foley, Daniel (Jane) Baynes of Foley, James (Jay) Baynes of Thornton, CO, Joyce Jennings of Eagle Lake, Nita (Skip) Lerdahl of Clear Lake, Suzanne (Richard) Pyzick of Mankato; 28 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Francis Hager of Waseca; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bohnert of Mankato and Phyllis Bohnert of Rosemount; other family, including Jeanne Baynes of Eden Prairie; and friend, Marion Kvam.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Scott in 1981; an infant son, Patrick; son, Robert (Carol) Baynes; sons-in-law, Ray Schoettler and James Jennings; six brothers and five sisters.

Mary's family would like to thank Sterling Park for the dedicated care they provided for her.
