Lifelong Mankato resident, Jim Paegel, age 52, lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday, December 24, 2013.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1706 Lee Blvd., in North Mankato with Rev. Bob Stover officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Rapidan at a later date. Mankato Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Jim was born on September 4, 1961 in Mankato to Donald and Viola (Kasabin) Paegel. He was a 1979 graduate of Mankato West High School. He worked at The Free Press for over 30 years and was very proud of the fact that he hadn't ever taken a sick day until September of this year. Jim was always known as the quiet one. But for those that got to know him, found he was a man with a great sense of humor, a huge heart, and a gentle touch. Jim's favorite thing to do was make an excellent meal, he made the "Best" dinosaur bones! He loved being outdoors, biking, and spending time with family. Jim enjoyed listening to the radio (105.5 The River), taking pictures, watching cooking shows, football, NASCAR, and ice cold beer! Jim will be deeply missed and will always have a very special place in our hearts!

The family would like to thank Dr. Thome, Dr. Smith, Dr. Olson, Dr. Cardamone-Rayner, Dr. Tin, Renee, Grace and the whole staff at the Andreas Cancer Center. You all made his journey a lot easier, with your smiles, expertise, and persistent attention, making sure he got the best care possible. He followed your orders to a T.

Jim is survived by his brother, John (Traci) Paegel; his sister, Lisa Paegel (Todd Salfer); nieces and nephews, Michele Paegel, Ashley (Vince) Brackelsberg, Kevin (Liz) Johnson, Alexis Paegel, Brett Persons and Erica Persons; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Rick.
