Luther Victor Johnson, age 95, of rural Lake Crystal, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Luther Memorial Home, Madelia.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 20, 2013 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Butternut. Burial with military honors will be in Our Saviour's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before service at church on Monday. Lake Crystal Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Luther Victor Johnson was born July 24, 1917, the second of four sons born to Bertel and Louise (Pederson) Johnson in Lincoln Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. Luther was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Butternut. He attended rural school and graduated from Madelia High School in 1935. Following high school graduation, Luther attended St. Olaf College, Northfield for one year. Luther was united in marriage to Elizabeth L. Lickfett on January 30, 1942 in Madelia. He farmed with his father until entering the United States Army on April 11, 1942. He completed basic training at Camp Wolters, (now Ft. Wolters) Texas and officer training at Ft. Belvoir, VA. He was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, Washington, D.C., and in the Philippines, during his active duty service. He then served in the Army Reserve, retiring in 1977 at a Lt. Colonel.

Luther and Elizabeth moved to Evergreen Grove Farm, rural Lake Crystal in March of 1947.

Luther was a lifetime member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Butternut, where he served on several boards and taught Sunday school for several years. He also served on the Luther Memorial Home board of directors. He was a member of the Lake Crystal American Legion and the Last Man Club of Mankato. Luther especially enjoyed deer and goose hunting, trapshooting, pitching horseshoes for several years on the Lake Crystal team, and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Luther is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Lake Crystal; son, Dean Johnson of Good Thunder; daughter, Dedra (Dwight) Hervey of Winnebago; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (Ardis) Johnson of Madelia; sister-in-law, Doris Johnson of Madelia; several nieces and nephews.

Luther was preceded in death by his two brothers, Arnold and Gordon; and great-grandson, Kyle.
