Paul E. Ulmen, age 83, of Mankato, died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Oaklawn Health Care Center, Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 13, 2013 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, North Mankato with Rev. Peter Nosbush, officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Sunday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at church on Monday. Interment with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Holy Rosary Catholic Church or Morson Ario VFW Club.
Paul was born a son of Edward and Gertrude (Landkamer) Ulmen, on January 5, 1930. Paul attended SS Peter and Paul Grade School and graduated from Loyola High School in 1948.
In March of 1951, he was united in marriage to Donna Mae Wrucke at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Mankato. The marriage was blessed with four children who are all among the survivors, Larry (Laurie) Ulmen of North Mankato, Cindy (Al) Paulson of Apple Valley, Ron of Mankato, and Becky of North Mankato; five grandchildren, Matt, JoAnna, and Kara Ulmen, Ryan (Trish) Paulson, Nathan Paulson and fianc", Megan Kaufenberg; one great-granddaughter, Joey Paulson; two sisters, Mary (Don) Haley of Mankato and Sister Evelyn Ulmen, SSND of Good Counsel Hill, Mankato; special friend, Bev Sawyer of Pathstone Living of Mankato.
In March of 1950, Paul started working at Neubert Millwork. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in October 1951, during the Korean Conflict, and served in Germany until being discharged in September of 1953.
After he was discharged he returned to Neubert Millwork and was a dedicated employee. After a total of over 50 years, he retired in December of 2002.
Paul was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters 552 where he served as Youth Director from 1954-57. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 11 and Morson Ario VFW Post 9713, where he served as Post Commander in 1980-81. He became Gaming Manager in July 1985 and served in that position until his death.
The last few years his activities were limited after being diagnosed with a lung disease, pulmonary fibrosis, which ultimately claimed his life.
Paul was preceded in death by his father and mother; and his wife, Donna in April 1989.
