Robert L. Pulis of Mankato, age 89, died Thursday, August 1, 2013 after living a good and full life. There will be a private service at a later date, burial to be at Calvary Cemetery in Mankato. Memorials to donor's choice. Arrangements by Mankato Mortuary.
Robert was born on September 6, 1923, in Iowa Falls, Iowa to Otis and Alice (Stanfield) Pulis. After graduating from high school he enlisted in the United States Navy just before World War II. After graduating from torpedo school he was assigned to the S-32 submarine, a First World War era boat. He spent the war sailing from Panama to the Battle of Midway to Dutch Harbor, Alaska. After patrols in the Aleutians he was sent to the Guam and Saipan area. He was recently honored with a medal for his duty in that area by the Commonwealth of Northern Marianas. His deployments proved to be the adventure of a lifetime and he carried a photo of the sub in his billfold till his final day. Bob was proud to be recognized for his service with an Honor Flight to Washington DC to visit the WWII memorial.
In 1950 he married Marjorie Maubach in Williams, Iowa and in 1952 they moved to Mankato where he worked for Iowa Veterinary Supply Co. for 18 years. In 1973, at the age of 51 he became a Blue Earth County Deputy, attaining the rank of Sergeant.
Robert loved playing hockey in his early years and helped the Webster City Leafs win the Iowa championship in 1947. He was also active in Golden Gloves boxing. While at Ellsworth Community College, he lettered in tennis but had to admit he never won a game. He had a lifetime passion for hunting (taught firearms safety courses for years), fishing, pistol shooting where he won many trophies and following the Twins and Vikings. He spent many trips in his camper on lakes near the Sawbill Trail in northern Minnesota. All he needed was his boat, some Christian Brothers Brandy, his pipe and enough canned goods to feed an army. He was happy with the simple things in life. Bob also loved his dogs Charlie and Gus. It was known that he and Marge would gladly care for any of the neighbor's dogs.
Bob is survived by two sons, Tim (Nancy) and Mike (Norma) of Mankato; sister, Janice Helfenbein of Thornton, Colorado; granddaughter, Abby of Chicago; grandson, James (Victoria) of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marjorie and sister, Lorraine.
