Roy Aron Carlson, age 84, of North Mankato, died Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Laurels Peak Rehabilitation Center in Mankato, following a two-week hospitalization for irregular heartbeats.
Memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, July 11, 2013, at St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Mankato. Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Mankato Mortuary and continues one hour prior to the memorial service at the church. A private interment will be held at Lakeside Cemetery in Hastings at a later date.
Roy was a first-generation American as his parents Aron (Sweden) and Anna (Norway) immigrated to America. They met in Mankato, were soon married and made their home in St. Paul. Roy was born there on October 29, 1928, joining an older sister.
As a teen, Roy enjoyed watching many exciting hockey games by his home high school, St. Paul Johnson. He also worked an after-school job making deliveries for Chase Printing in downtown St. Paul. After graduating in 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea until his honorable discharge in 1947.
Through the G.I. Bill, Roy attended St. Cloud State to earn a degree in education. During his summer breaks, he thoroughly enjoyed his work for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources doing lake surveys of fish populations. Upon earning his college degree, he taught math and science for one year at Hector, MN, and then taught primarily eighth-grade math at Lincoln and West junior high schools in the Mankato school system for 29 years. Roy also spent many summers as a drivers' education instructor and as a house painting contractor.
Roy married Wilma Truax of Hastings on December 17, 1960. They were parents to three children and lived in lower North Mankato. Wilma passed away in 1986. In 1994, he married Lucille Elke of Mankato, and gained four new adult children. For the past two years, Roy and Lucille have been residents of Oak Terrace Assisted Living.
Roy enjoyed life, spending time with family and friends, had a passion for listening to his collection of music, and loved to travel, particularly by train.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille; sons, Thor Carlson of St. Paul and Chris (Kay) Carlson of Nicollet; daughter, Wanda (Mike) Lloyd of North Mankato; step-daughters, Christine Blair of Thornton, CO, and Karen (Gerald) Durham of Chino, CA; step-sons, Greg (Pat) Elke of Eagan and James (Jenni) Elke of Lafayette, CO; and 23 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy Brockman; and first wife, Wilma.
