George "Al" Sutherland, age 84, of Lake Crystal, died Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System " Mankato.
Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church in Lake Crystal, with Rev. Randal Lubbers officiating. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m., Saturday in Lake Crystal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Lake Crystal Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to an organization of the donor's choice.
Al was born on October 29, 1928, to George and Vivian (Bowen) Sutherland. He was a graduate of Lake Crystal High School and attended Mankato State College. Al married Edith Campbell on July 14, 1951, at Jerusalem Presbyterian Church, Judson Township.
Al started delivering bulk service in high school for his father's Mobil Oil business and later operated the Mobil Station with his brother-in-law. He was employed as the City Clerk for the City of Lake Crystal for 35 years. Al was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lake Crystal, where he served as a Youth Leader, Elder, Deacon, and Treasurer. He was also active in the Lake Crystal Lions for many years. Following his retirement, Al spent most of his time in his woodshop making wooden treasures for his family. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, motorcycling, planning practical jokes, and spending time with family and friends. In recent years, he enjoyed watching the Gophers and Minnesota Twins.
Al was stricken with polio at the age of 3. Against all odds he walked in one form or another for almost 70 years. Even though afflicted with a severe disability, he never complained or gave up. With the support of his wife and soul mate, Edith, Al was able to live a full, productive, and happy life.
Al is survived by his two children, Cathy (Gerald) Magnus of Slayton and Steve (Jean) Sutherland of Peoria, AZ; six granddaughters, Jodi, Jacki, Janel, Annette, Jasmine, and Heidi; one grandson, Mitchell; one great-granddaughter, Taylor; five great-grandsons, Daulton, Carter, Linkoln, Anthony, and Brody; sister, Velma Collis of Lake Crystal; one niece, Susan; two nephews, Noel and Paul; special sister-in-law, Lorraine Campbell of St. Peter.
Al was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith in 2007; one niece, Kay; and brother-in-law, Omar.
