Mayo Wallace Granaas, age 85, of rural Mankato died, unexpectedly Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at his home.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 4, 2013 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mankato with Pastor Collette Broady Preiss, officiating. Visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m., Sunday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Minneopa Cemetery, rural Mankato. Memorials may be given to The March of Dimes, Pheasants Forever, or the charity of your choice.

Mayo was born Nov 21, 1927 to Einar, Sr. and Emma (Reihs) Granaas in New Ulm. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1946. He served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War from 1948 to 1952, achieving the rank of Sergeant 1st Class. On January 5, 1959, Mayo married Phyllis Hilgers in Mankato at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Mayo was employed as a supervisor at Midwest Electric, Inc. until he retired in 1986. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his 10 trips to Alaska, attending auctions and most of all, rock hunting throughout the United States. He was a member of the MN Valley Gem & Mineral Club for over 45 years.

Mayo is survived by his wife, Phyllis; son, Dr. Michael (Clare) Granaas of Vermillion, South Dakota; daughter, Deb (Don) Fenner of Farmington, Minnesota; grandchildren, Amanda, Paul, and Andrew Granaas; sister-in-law, Patricia Morrow of Mapleton and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Donna and Ron Giefer of Nicollet; many nieces and nephews.

Mayo was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Arline Rist; and brother Einar Granaas, Jr.
