Norma Jean Dent, age 85 of Mankato, died Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at her home.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 13, 2010 at First Christian Church in Mankato, with Rev. Nancy Giese and Rev. Keith Purscell officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Christian Church, the American Cancer Society, or charity of donor's choice. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Norma was born January 27, 1925 in Kansas City, MO and was delivered at home with the assistance of her grandmother, Pauline Knight. She was the second daughter of Charles E. and Alvenia (Dahlem) Redenbaugh. Norma became a Christian at a very young age and attended Jackson Avenue First Christian Church in Kansas City, MO. Norma graduated from East High School in Kansas City, where she was elected to the National Honor Society. She also held an office with the Girl's Reserve, as well as the literary society, KALAILU. She married Robert Leo Dent on June 26, 1943 in Walla Walla, Washington, where Robert was a member of the US Navy Airforce.
Norma was a 50 year member of the General Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. In 1969, she graduated at the top of her class from the Harlan, Iowa School of Nursing. She retired from the maternity ward at ISJ Hospital in 1987. After retirement, she began volunteering with the American Red Cross Association. Norma was actively involved as a member of the Mankato First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, where she enjoyed her affiliation with the Christian Women's Fellowship. In her spare time, Norma loved quilting and received numerous First Place and Best of Fair ribbons for her Nicollet County Fair entries. She also enjoyed having lunch with her friends, needlepoint, hardanger, crewel, embroidery, reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, and traveling with family and friends.
Norma is survived by her six children, Linda (Dwight) Sprague of Branson, MO, Ronald (Vicki) Dent of Fort Worth, TX, Robin (Bob) Meierer of Blue Springs, MO, Sherry (Nick) Picinich of Rohnert Park, CA, John (Brenda Marie) Dent of St. Peter, MN, Tim (Brenda Jean) Dent of Branson, MO; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Lee Woodward of Independence, KS; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert L. Dent, and her two brothers, Charles and J.D. Redenbaugh.
