Donald Wayne Holzapfel, age 79, of Mankato, died Thursday, November 4, 2010 at his home.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 8, 2010 at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, North Mankato. Burial will be in Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m., Sunday at Mankato Mortuary with a sharing of memories at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before service at church on Monday. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.
Donald was born July 26, 1931 to Aloys P. and Esther A. S. (Werner) Holzapfel in Mankato. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School thru 8th grade and graduated from Mankato High School in 1949. Don was united in marriage to Vera A. Rogers on November 17, 1951 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mankato. He was employed by Coca-Cola in Mankato for several years. In 1956 he began working for Dahlen Transport, driving over one million accident free miles before retiring after 35 years.
Don enjoyed camping and fishing, playing cards, water skiing, woodworking, pheasant hunting, spending time with friends, telling jokes, time with his family, playing guitar for his grandchildren, spending time in the garage, keeping his yard neat, and especially all the black vehicles he had over his lifetime and keeping them spotless.
Donald is survived by his loving and caring wife of 59 years, Vera of Mankato; three children, Vickie Conlon, Sharon (Dennis) Dieken all of Mankato, Mike (Renee) Holzapfel of rural North Mankato; five grandchildren, Jenny Conlon, Mike Conlon, Beth Holzapfel and special friend, Eric Adams, April Holzapfel and fianc", Brian Hopkins, and Alyssa Dieken; one brother, Richard (Janice) Holzapfel of Kyle, TX; two sisters, Dorothy (George) Srsen of Eau Claire, WI, Lois (Howard) Hoffmann of Lafayette; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Darwin Yungerberg of North Mankato, Duane (Charlotte) Rogers of Lake Crystal, Audrey (Gus) Degler of Eagan, and Helen Owens of Lake Crystal; many nieces and nephews.
Donald was preceded in death by his father and brother, Aloys and Gean on May 31, 1937; mother, Esther on August 11, 1992; step father, Hubbard Thurston; two sisters, Phyllis Yungerberg in 2008 and one in infancy.
