Opal M. Nourie Schuch, age 96, of Mankato, peacefully traveled to her heavenly home on September 29, 2013, at Laurels Peak in Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mankato, with Rev. Tim Biren officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Waseca. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church or the donor's choice.
Opal was born on October 24, 1916, in Nicollet County to Arthur and Pearl (Glad) Nourie. She was one of 13 children and attended grade school at Judson. She worked for room and board in Mankato while attending high school. Opal was married to John J. Schuch on July 25, 1934. After their marriage, they farmed near Lake Crystal, later moving to a farm near Nicollet and later to their farm near Eagle Lake. John and Opal farmed in Mankato Township, Blue Earth County while raising their six children. Opal's interests were flowers, gardening, sewing, playing piano, playing cards with friends, cooking, and traveling. On her many trips she was able to visit countries such as: Medjugorji, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Hawaii, Germany, Rome, the Holy Lands, Greece and Pompeii, Italy.
Opal is survived by her children, Ronald (Carol) Schuch of Janesville, J. Arthur (Charlene) Schuch of Amboy, and JoAnne Schuch of Mora; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Dennis Nourie of Mankato; many nieces and nephews; daughter-in-law, Rosella Weishar of Emmetsburg, IA; sons-in-law, Greg Tegels of Waconia and William Fitzpatrick of North Mankato.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John in November, 1982; son, Herbert in October, 1974; daughters, Charlene in June, 2011 and Karolyn in August, 2011; great-grandson, Colton in April, 1995; daughter-in-law, Charlene in August, 2010; brothers, Dwayne and Clifford; sisters, Anita Gelino, Isabella Johnston, Agnes Schlieman, Ethel Evans, Thelma Summers, Margaret Frietag, Gertrude Muesing, Dolores Volk, and Magdaline Nourie.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staffs of Keystone and Laurels Peak for their loving care and affection for Opal.
