Harold Wallace Johnson, age 77, of Mankato, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 14, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System " Mankato, due to bladder cancer.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mankato, with Rev. Paul Nolting officiating. Interment will be in Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Mankato Mortuary, and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Harold was born on April 23, 1936, and raised in Decoria Township, south of Mankato, Minnesota. He was the son of Jonas and Dorothy (Davidson) Johnson. Harold went to school, grades 1-8, at the one-room Iron Bridge School (District #131), and graduated from Mankato High School in 1954. He married Ann M. Schweim on September 18, 1956. In addition to farming with his older brother "J.J.", he worked for the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service (ASCS). After the ASCS position, he worked for Blue Earth County as an appraiser in the assessor's office for 27 years, retiring in 1998. He enjoyed traveling, camping, deer hunting, ice spearing, snowmobiling, wood-working, playing cards, and socializing with his very many friends and acquaintances. In particular, he cherished having breakfast at the Wagon Wheel Caf" and Best Webster, and his monthly card game with the boys. Harold had a special knack for making friends of the people he met, and remembering their names, locations, and family backgrounds. He truly appreciated his nieces and nephews (and their children), and considered them "rent-a-kids" when they came to visit.

Harold is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann M. Johnson; son, David H. Johnson and daughter-in-law, Shari M. Schaftlein of Alexandria, Virginia; sister, Joyce Borneke of Mankato; very special cousins, nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Norma (Luverne) Lueck and Carol Brenner, all of Mankato; brother-in-law, Paul (Amalia) Schweim of Owatonna.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kay Marie Johnson in 1970; and three older siblings: brother, Welford ("J.J."), and sisters, Corinne Davey and LaVonne Murray.
