Joseph Allen Leonard, age 71 of Mankato, died of cancer, Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Pathstone Living in Mankato.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato with Pastor John Petersen officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 " 7 p.m., Wednesday at Northview " North Mankato 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato. Visitation continues one hour before the service at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Mayo Clinic Health Systems Mankato " Hospice, Mankato YMCA or Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Joe was born April 19, 1942 to Lawrence and Catherine (McNallan) Leonard in Rochester, Minnesota. Joe attended St. John's Catholic School and graduated from Lourdes High School in Rochester. He graduated from Mankato State College (MSU) in 1964. Joe worked in management for DDD Motel Corporation from over 34 years, first in Rochester and then at the Holiday Inn in downtown Mankato. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Martin on March 8, 1986 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato.
Joe took great pride in his six grandchildren. He always had a wonderful story to share about each of them to whomever was willing to listen. He was loved and admired by all of his nieces and nephews. Joe's hobbies included golf, playing cards, fishing and traveling.
Joe's memberships included Christ the King Lutheran Church, Kiwanis club of Mankato " Downtown, CVB of Mankato, Mankato United Way, Mankato Golf Club, YMCA, AA.
Joe is survived by his wife, Phyllis Leonard of Mankato; children, Richard and Stacey Martin, Scott and Molly Martin both of Ankeny, IA; six grandchildren, Kelly, Christopher, Cameron, Benjamin, Emily, and Jack; two sisters, Mary Jackson of Overland Park, KS, Virginia Boutell of Orange County, CA; two brothers, Larry and Sue Leonard of Zumbro Falls, MN, Thomas and Carol Leonard of Rochester, MN; sister-in-law, Mona Leonard of Rochester, MN; Phyllis's brothers and their wives, Gerald and Emelie Augustine of Nisswa, MN and Wayne and Janetta Augustine of Glencoe, MN; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Don Leonard; brother-in-law, Charles Jackson; nephew, Mark Leonard.
