Gary L. Krengel, age 79, died peacefully on Wednesday August 14, 2013 at his home in Mapleton surrounded by his family.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 19, 2013 at St. John Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Rev. Vicki Hultine officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Mapleton. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the church with visitation continuing one hour prior to the service on Monday. Olson-Tichenor Funeral Home is in charge.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice Mankato or the Gary Krengel Maple River Scholarship Fund.
Gary L. Krengel was born April 16th, 1934 to Leo "Chuck" and Verona (Bunde) Krengel in Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran in Good Thunder and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran in Mapleton. Gary graduated from Good Thunder High School in 1952 and attended vocational schools for specialized training. On September 14, 1969 he was united in marriage to JoAnn Roberts at St. John's Lutheran in Mapleton. Gary and JoAnn were happily married for 44 years. They are blessed with three sons-Paul, Lee, and Jason.
Gary had a strong faith in God. He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran in Mapleton and taught Sunday School and served on the Church Council. Gary served in the US Army in Korea and later was an active member of the Mapleton VFW and American Legion Post 0287. Gary was one of the first board members of the Mapleton Child Care Center. Gary and his brother Harold started Krengel Bros. Farm Drainage in 1953 and were partners in business for over 50 years. After Gary retired from his tiling career, he never hesitated to talk tiling and help with questions. Gary was blessed to work with so many wonderful employees and customers in the surrounding area and truly cared for their welfare and for the land.
Gary loved his family with all his heart and especially had great joy spending time with his grandchildren. Gary stated he lived for his grandchildren. He loved his extended family /friends deeply. He enjoyed his morning breakfast with family and friends at Lyndel's Caf" and Token restaurants, riding his bike, fishing, gardening, enjoyed watching his sons play sports, singing with Connie and Friends, and spending wonderful winters in Arizona.
Gary is survived by his wife, JoAnn; children, Paul (Megan) Krengel of Woodbury, MN-grandchildren Nathanael and Addison, Lee (Annette) Krengel of Gainesville, FL-grandchildren Jack and Nina, Jason (Jennifer) Krengel Good Thunder, MN-grandchildren Ian, Reid, Lillian and Lana; two brothers Roger (Dixie) Krengel, Ronald (Illa Jean) Krengel, sister-in-laws Rev" Krengel, and Pattie Krengel; the Roberts family; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Leo (Chuck) and Verona Krengel; and brothers-Jerome and Harold Krengel.
