Donald L. Hoffman, age 87, of Mankato passed away Monday, November 25, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System " Mankato after a short illness.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Nolting officiating. A visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at the Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour before the service at church. Burial will be in Woodland Hills Memorial Park, Mankato.
He was born on April 22, 1926 to Herman and Hattie (Luescher) in Williow Lake Township, Redwood County. He grew up on the family farm by Wanda, MN, along the banks of the Sleepy Eye Creek. He attended District 94 Country School and Wabasso Public High School. He was employed by the Great Northern Railroad as a fireman. He went to work for Schulze and Burch Biscuit Co. Flavorkist, as a route salesman, where he was known as "Cookie Hoffman". He was involved in insurance sales for over 40 years. His mind was a plat book as his work took him to back country roads in seven counties. He enjoyed lasting friendships with his policyholders, many of whom took out their very first insurance policy of any kind with him. Donald was also a volunteer driver for many years.
On October 18, 1953 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Hahn at Mountville in Gaylord, MN and they were married for 25 years.
Some of the joys in Donald's life have included going out for coffee with friends; flower gardening; polka music; biking; walking his dogs and being with his special Golden Retriever, Tosha. Through earned insurance trips he traveled the world and he took his daughter, Karen with him. He was active in community service groups including Lions Club, Kiwanis, and the Kato Community Club. Don had the gift of seeing the humor in life. He valued family and one of his greatest joys was when he could be with his grandchildren.
Donald was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Mankato. He had daily family Bible devotions and his faith in God meant everything to him. He knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and he had the one thing needful.
He is survived by his two daughters, LuAnn Hultgren of Mankato and Karen Hoffman of Mankato; one grandson, Michael Hultgren of Mankato; brother, Glen (Lila) Hoffman of Redwood Falls; cousins; nieces; and nephews.
He was preceded in death by granddaughter, Natalie Hultgren; sister, Inez Schweim; and brother, Ervin Hoffman.
