James H. Peterson, age 79 of North Mankato, died surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 15, 2013 at Messiah Lutheran Church in North Mankato with Rev. Robert Stover officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Northview " North Mankato Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

James H. Peterson was born August 17, 1934 to Harry and Mary (Bacon) Peterson in Staples, Minnesota. He graduated from Staples High School, attended the University of Minnesota before graduating from Moorhead State University. Jim was united in marriage to Joan Betchwars on June 5, 1967. He taught high school Math at Red Lake, Dodge Center, Shakopee, and Aitkin where he also coached basketball, track, and golf, before retiring in 1989.

Jim was a member of Messiah Lutheran in North Mankato. He enjoyed the outdoors taking part in Masters Track and Field, hunting, fishing, softball, golfing. Jim also enjoyed bowling and watching his grandchildren's sporting events.

Jim is survived by his wife, Joan of North Mankato; five children, Julie (Yorrick) Byers of Maple Grove, MN, Jennifer (Brad) Menk of Mankato, LuAnne (Zane) Patterson of Somerset, WI, Steve (Priscilla) Peterson of St. Anthony, MN, Carin Peterson of Minneapolis, MN; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one on the way; a sister, Joni (Ralph) Hvidsten of Mesa, AZ; two brothers, John (La Donna) Peterson of Motley, MN, Bob (Darla) Peterson of Staples, MN; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Lorraine, Donna; and nephew, James.
