Cy passed away on April 20th at his home at the age of 78. A Memorial Mass will be held for Cy at St. Clair’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Clair, MN on Friday, April 24, at 3:00 pm, with a visitation beginning 1 hour prior. Father Schneider will be officiating. Military honors will follow the service.
Cy was born January 23, 1948, in Mankato, MN, the fourth child to Bert and Hildegard (Drummer) Denn. Cy graduated from St. Clair High School in 1966. He immediately began working for Kato Engineering for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army Security Agency in May 1968. He was honorably discharged in April 1971 after one tour in Vietnam/Thailand. In the fall of 1971, he began attending Mankato State University and graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Finance with minors in Political Science and Economics. Cy continued his post-education working on an MBA degree until 1982. He furthered his financial service education, earning his Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation in 1981, Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), and Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF).
After his time in the military, Cy farmed for his father and then was re-employed with Kato Engineering until 1974, when he became a Financial Advisor with MetLife. He eventually became a manager with MetLife, transferring to Sioux Falls, SD in 1983. In 1989, he became a manager with Prudential Insurance Company and in 1992 transferred to Aberdeen, SD as director. The family moved back to Mankato in 1996, where Cy was re-employed with MetLife as a Financial Advisor/Planner until he retired in 2001 after qualifying as a disabled American Veteran.
Cy was a member of the American Legion Post 475 (St. Clair), VFW Post 950 (Mankato), DAV Chapter 16 (Mankato), Key City Conservation Club, Minnesota Valley Corvette Club, National Corvette Museum, NRA, Farm Bureau, Farm America, and was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
He enjoyed traveling near and far, attending horse shows with his children, listening to music, dancing, reading, working on the computer, watching the Vikings, westerns, and recorded TV shows—because he hated commercials.
Cy is survived by his ex-wife Darlene Denn, three daughters; Darcy (Jon) Bormann, Amanda (Gus) Giuttari, and Cassy (Joe) Stephanie; grandchildren Matthew and Andrew Bormann, and Gigi, Vinny, and Gemma Giuttari; sisters Vera (Jerry) Serfling and Rita Loeffler; brother-in-law Ray Veroeven; 10 nieces and nephews; and many first cousins. Also surviving Cy is his longtime companion, Carol Hanson, and her family.
Cy was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents Joe and Mary (Tacheny) Drummer and Paul and Theresa (Frederick) Denn; his brother Ed; sisters Mary Ellen and Donna Veroeven; and infant grandson Trey.
