Diane Brennan

Diane Rae Brennan died October 14, 2026. Diane was born in Storm Lake, Iowa in 1935. She moved to Southern Minnesota as a young girl and grew up in Mankato, graduating from Mankato High School. Diane maintained lifelong connections with her many high school classmates, a testament to her warm and enduring relationships.

After high school Diane worked various jobs, including the Mankato Library (present Carnegie Center) and as a carhop at the Oasis Drive-in. Diane met her husband Bernie Brennan when he owned Brennan’s Direct Service gas stations. Diane and Bernie raised their 3 children: Mike, Lisa, and Kristi. Diane dedicated her time raising her 3 children as a stay-at-home mom until Kristi, the youngest, started school. At this point she pursued her passion for education and attended Mankato State where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education/library science. She went on to work in the Mankato Public Schools for over 20 years spending most of her career as the beloved Mankato West head librarian. Upon retirement Diane enjoyed substitute teaching, frequently subbing at Lincoln Alternative School (present Central High School). Diane also enjoyed working at the women’s clothing store Fawbush’s at the Mankato Mall, including modeling which showcased her versatility and grace.

Diane shared a love for traveling, enjoying adventures with friends and family. Diane’s travels included memorable moments as a West chaperone and memorable world trips with her dear companion Howard Vetter. She also enjoyed relaxing at her Lutsen Sea Villa, introducing this wonderful place to her family. Thanks, Mom.

Diane’s hobbies and passions reflected her vibrant personality. She enjoyed golfing in leagues with friends, loved reading, enjoyed working out at the YMCA, interior decorating, and hosting gatherings. As an animal lover she always ensured her family home had a dog and her compassionate spirit extended to all living things. She was an active member of Centenary United Methodist church.

Diane was an advocate for education and was immensely proud of her college degree and made it a priority for her children to pursue higher education.

Diane moved to River Stone (formerly Pillars) in 2023 and quickly found joy in this community, citing the wonderful residents and staff as her favorite part of living there. We want to thank the amazing staff.

Diane was preceded in death by her beloved mother Mildred Zeno (Grandma Mildred) and her father Ray Flohr. Diane is survived by her sister Barbara (Lyle) Svedahl, adult children Mike (Cathy) Brennan, Lisa (John) Bigham, Kristi (Larry) Maruska, and Chuck (Cheri) Freeland, as well as 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Diane, Mom, Grandma Di will always be remembered for her gentle wisdom, her quiet strength, and her unassuming beauty and grace.
