Dr. Monte Bruce Curtis of Mankato, MN, passed away on January 20, 2024, following a brief illness. He was 90 years old.
Monte was born on July 14, 1933, in Roseberry, ID to Jesse and Edith (Pottenger) Curtis, he grew up in Boise, ID. After his father’s untimely death, he was raised by his widowed mother. After high school, Monte attended Idaho State College before enrolling in dental school at the University of Minnesota. While a dental student, he met Marjorie Snow, a student nurse from Menomonie, WI, and they married on July 13, 1957. After graduation, Monte served in the Air Force Dental Corps, stationed in Myrtle Beach, SC. He entered the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, and completed his training in 1965.
He moved his growing family to Mankato, MN later that year and established a well-respected oral surgery practice. He was renowned throughout southern Minnesota for having removed the wisdom teeth of innumerable local residents, many of whom kindly expressed their gratitude to him for years, even long after his retirement in 1996.
After retiring, he enjoyed summers in Walker, MN and winters in Goodyear, AZ before returning to live full time in Mankato in 2020.
Monte is survived by his four sons, Steven (JoAnn) of Madison Lake, MN, David (Suzanne) of Jordan, MN, Jeffrey of Mankato, MN, and Gregory (Tricia) of Goodyear, AZ and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Terrell, Martha, and Dwayne; and his wife of 66 years, Marjorie.
Private services are planned. Memorials are preferred to Christ the King Lutheran Church. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
