Evelyn Esther Oldenborg

Our energizer bunny’s batteries ran out and Evelyn Esther (Saam) Oldenborg, age 103 years, 11 months of Mapleton, formerly of Lake Crystal died on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at the Mapleton Community Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Lake Crystal. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Father Tim Reker will officiate, and interment will be in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, Lake Crystal. Evelyn was born July 12, 1918 to Simon and Esther (Casper) Saam on a farm near Cleveland, MN. She attended and graduated from Cleveland High School. After graduation she worked as a postal clerk. On October 26, 1940 she was united in marriage to Harley Oldenborg at the Church of Nativity, Cleveland. They farmed for three years near Madison Lake and then near Lake Crystal for 63 years.

Evelyn was a homemaker and helped with the farming. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends and keeping up with events in everyone’s lives. She had a network of friends, spanning generations and all walks of life. She sent many cards and letters, never forgetting a significant date or event. She also enjoyed baking, was an excellent seamstress, loved dancing and playing cards and always tended a large vegetable garden. She had many flower beds around the farm and carried on the legacy of the yellow rose. She was a 4-H leader, the superintendent of flowers at the Blue Earth County Fair for several years and was a member of the Lake Crystal Garden Club. Evelyn was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Lincoln Harmony Club, many card clubs, and a past member of Lionesses.

Evelyn is survived by her five daughters, Karen (Robert) Mohalski of Hebron, KY, Faye (Donald) Turpin of Schullsburg, WI, Connie (Robert) Conlon of Gulf Shores, AL, Ardis (Craig) Bair of Minnesota Lake, MN and Mary Duerr of Maplewood, MN; 15 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandsons, as well as several nieces and nephews who were very special to her.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Harley; parents; brother, Clayton Saam, and son-in-law, Rocklyn Duerr.
