Gayle McMonagle, age 76, of Garden City, Minnesota lost her battle to cancer on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minnesota surrounded by her husband, two children, and brother.
Visitation will be held at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary from 4:00-7:00 P.M. on Friday, September 26, 2025. Funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at Northview with visitation one hour prior and a burial following at Garden City Cemetery.
Gayle was born on February 15, 1949 in Faribault, Minnesota to Warren and Helen (Edwards) Meshke. The family moved to a farm outside of Garden City in 1960, and she graduated from Garden City High School in 1967. On August 15th, 1970, she married her high school sweetheart, Richard McMonagle. The couple moved to Port Hueneme, California, where Richard was serving in the U.S. Navy Seabees. After his years of service were completed, they moved back to Garden City in December 1972 and bought the home that they still live in to this day. Unable to have biological children, they adopted two children from South Korea, Kristen, in 1978 and Joshua, in 1980.
Gayle worked for the Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial School District for 30 years as a library aide and paraprofessional. During those years, she formed many close friendships with her coworkers who remember her fondly for her laughter and smile. In 2013, she was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had surgery to remove the tumor. She remained cancer free for two years and chose to retire after the cancer returned. She was able to enjoy life for another 10 years.
Family and friends were most important to her. Her greatest joy was being a wife and mother. Gayle would always listen to you if you had a problem and give advice if needed. She enjoyed staying in touch with everyone on Facebook and commenting on posts. It was often her only connection to family and friends during her many hospital visits. She was a fan of all Minnesota sports teams, but she was the biggest fan of her grandchildren, nephews, and brother. She loved watching their basketball games, cross country meets, football games, and fast pitch softball tournaments.
Gayle is survived by her husband, Richard McMonagle; her two children, Kristen (Phil) Lundberg of Moorhead, Minnesota, and Joshua McMonagle of Morgan, Minnesota; three grandchildren, Ethan, Sara, and Anna Lundberg; her brother, Blake (Sheryl) Meshke of Garden City, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Beverly (Kermit) Krueger of Stanton, California; brother-in-law, Erik Wittmann of Raleigh, North Carolina; nephews, Derek Meshke of Brookings, South Dakota, Brent (Leslie) Meshke of Lake Crystal, Minnesota, and Derek Krueger of Bandera, Texas; and niece, Kari Rust of Stanton, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Helen Meshke; sister, Tonia Wittmann; and her in-laws, Joseph W. and Lois McMonagle.
