Jose Candido Menjivar Calles

Jose Candido Menjivar Calles, age 90, of Mankato, died Friday, February 18, 2022, at home surrounded by his family.

Jose was born October 3, 1931, in Chalatenango, a rural community in El Salvador. His family later moved closer to the city. Jose married Maria Menjivar in May 1962. Jose worked as an industrial mechanic for 35 years in El Salvador. He later worked as a photographer. In 2002, Jose and Maria moved to Mankato and studied ESL at the Lincoln Community Center. He proudly became a U.S. citizen when he was 78. In Mankato, he worked part-time at the Again Thrift Store for 14 years. Jose was a faithful member of New Creation World Outreach Church and enjoyed singing and serving others. He was selfless, resilient, and always positive.

He will be forever missed by his family, including his wife of over 59 years, Maria Menjivar of Mankato; 9 children, Antonio Menjivar of Texas, Dora (Layne) Clark of Florida, Raul Menjivar of El Salvador, Nelson C. (Marta) Menjivar of Texas, Emilio I. (Lourdes) Menjivar of North Mankato, MN, Rosa Herrera of Texas, Ana I. (Lou Blanco) Alonzo of Mankato, Lilian M. (Feliciano) Castaneda of North Mankato, MN, and Joe R. (Hanh) Menjivar of Mankato; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with funeral service starting at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 25, 2022, at New Creation World Outreach Church, 1124 North River Drive, North Mankato, MN 56003. A light lunch will be served after the service, and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Mankato. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
