Kathryn ‘Kathy’ Byram, age 82, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2026, at the Mapleton Community Home. A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 9 at United Church of Mapleton from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Memorial Service on Monday, August 10 will begin at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior.
Kathy was born on November 8, 1943, to Ernest and Dollis (Nichols) Hansen. She attended Garden City School and graduated in 1961. She then attended Mankato State College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics in 1964. On September 4, 1964, she married David Byram. The following summer they moved to Mapleton, where Kathy began her teaching career in Home Economics at Mapleton High School. After several years of teaching, she joined two friends in opening the Plaid Piper Gift and Floral Shop in March of 1982, where she enjoyed serving the community for many years. Kathy also faithfully served as one of the organists at the United Church of Mapleton for more than 35 years.
Kathy was an avid sports fan. Whether cheering on her children and grandchildren from the stands or watching professional sports, she loved every game. She also cherished many years of playing bridge with her close friends. One of her greatest joys was spending time in her flower gardens, where she found peace and happiness.
Kathy will be remembered for her kindness, quiet generosity, unwavering faith, and the love she had for her family, friends, and community.
Kathy is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, David; her sons, Lee and Jay (Mandy); her daughter, Jill; grandchildren Alex (Emma), Levi (special friend Rachael), Ethan (Kara), Javen, Morgan, and Jakobie; sister, Mary (Jim) Conroy; along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Dollis Hansen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Heather Curling Club, the Mapleton Fire Department, or the Maple River AAA Foundation.
