Margaret Ruth Madson

Margaret (Schmidt) Madson was born on January 11, 1938, in Faulkton, SD. Her parents were the Rev. Walter J. Schmidt and his wife, Margaret (Mayer) Schmidt.

In 1942, Margaret moved with her family to Danube, MN, where her father served as pastor at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. In 1946, the family moved to New Ulm, MN, where her father served as pastor at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for more than 25 years.

Margaret’s school years were therefore mostly spent in New Ulm, MN at St. Paul’s Lutheran School, Martin Luther High School, and two years at Dr. Martin Luther College. In 1959, Margaret married Andrew Madson and moved to Appleton, WI, where her husband was teaching at Fox Valley Lutheran High School. It was in Appleton where Margaret’s two children were born – Amy Lynn, who died at the age of 42, and Douglas Paul, who is retired and living in Treasure Island, FL. Neither of her children were married.

In 1962, Margaret and her family moved to Wauwatosa, WI where her husband taught at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. When her children reached school age, Margaret returned to school herself and obtained both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. She then taught at numerous schools in the Wisconsin Synod of the Lutheran Church in the Milwaukee area. In the year 2000, she retired after teaching for 24 years at St. John’s Lutheran School in Wauwatosa.

Margaret was a swimmer. As a teenager, shew worked as a lifeguard at the beautiful New Ulm swimming pool at Johnson Park. She was a member of the synchronized swimming team, which performed water ballet events at various pools in southern Minnesota. She also taught waterfront safety classes for the Milwaukee chapter of the American Red Cross.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her one daughter, Amy Madson, of Milwaukee, WI; and her one sister, Dorothy Buyert, of Stone Mountain, GA. She is survived by her husband, Andrew Madson of North Mankato, MN; her one son, Douglas Madson, of Treasure Island, FL; brother-in-law, Arlin Buyert of Leawood, KS; niece, Beth (Buyert) Spears of Decatur, GA; nephew, Matthew Buyert of Atlanta, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews on the Madson side of her family.

Funeral service will be held at 11am, Saturday, August 6, 2022 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (304 Monroe Avenue, North Mankato, MN 56003) with visitation one hour prior to the service. Graveside service will be held at 11am, Monday, August 8, 2022 at Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown, WI.

Memorials are preferred to Risen Savior Lutheran School (516 W. 7th Street, Mankato, MN 56001) or Mount Olive Lutheran School (1123 Marsh Street, Mankato, MN 56001).
