Marvel Peterson

Marvel Florence (Johnson) Peterson, age 93, of Mapleton, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort knowing she is once again in the arms of her beloved husband, Loren, after a lifetime defined by unwavering love, quiet devotion, and extraordinary grace.

Marvel was born on May 18, 1933, in Lakeville, Minnesota, to Maurice and Lillian (Mohn) Johnson. She attended country school in rural Dakota County through eighth grade before graduating from Lakeville High School in 1951. During her school years, she worked summers at the Lakeville Creamery, developing the work ethic and humility that would characterize her throughout her life.

That same fall, Marvel enrolled at Mankato State Teachers College, pursuing her lifelong calling of becoming an elementary school teacher. She earned her teaching certificate in 1953 and later completed her Bachelor's degree in 1968, a testament to her dedication to education and lifelong learning.

As fulfilling as her career would become, perhaps the most beautiful chapter of Marvel's story began at a simple church hayride, where she met the love of her life, Loren Peterson. While Marvel was attending Mankato State Teachers College, the two became engaged as Loren faithfully served his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during a 21-month deployment in Korea. Though separated by thousands of miles, their love only grew stronger. On June 12, 1954—Loren's 25th birthday—they were married in rural Lakeville, beginning a remarkable love story that would span more than seven decades. They honeymooned along the North Shore of Lake Superior and into Canada before building a beautiful life together in Lakeville, Northfield, and ultimately Mapleton, where they made their home in 1961.

Together they raised three children: Scott (Lynn) Peterson, Ross (Christine) Peterson, and Kris (Pat) Rigdon. Their family grew to include eight cherished grandchildren, thirteen adored great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Nothing brought Marvel greater joy than watching her family grow. She celebrated every accomplishment, asked about every detail, remembered every story, and made each person feel deeply loved. Her greatest gift was making people feel like they mattered.

Marvel devoted 29 years to teaching second and third grade in Bloomington, Northfield, Lakeville, Garden City, and Minnesota Lake before retiring in 1991. She shaped countless young lives with the same patience, encouragement, and gentle spirit that defined every aspect of who she was.

Retirement was simply the beginning of another wonderful adventure. Marvel and Loren owned and operated an antique business for fifteen years, managing shops in both Minnesota and Arizona while traveling to weekend antique shows together. They embraced life with enthusiasm, spending winters as snowbirds in Arizona and Florida, traveling throughout Europe—including Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Norway—and making treasured memories in Hawaii and on countless RV trips with friends and family.

Marvel found joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved playing bridge, curling, bowling, traveling, meeting new friends wherever life took her, and sharing stories with anyone willing to listen. She possessed a rare gift for conversation that left everyone feeling like an old friend. Her warmth, kindness, quick wit, and quiet wisdom made people naturally gravitate toward her.

To her grandchildren, Grandma's house was pure magic. It was where sleepovers turned into lifelong memories, where card games filled the table with laughter, and where Christmas traditions of making lefse and meatballs became treasured family rituals. The nutcracker soldiers standing proudly throughout her home each Christmas became as much a part of the season as the love that filled every room. Her smile could brighten anyone's day, and her unmistakable laugh is a sound her family will carry in their hearts forever.

Marvel was also wonderfully, and quite famously, known for accidentally leaving her purse behind wherever she went—a small, endearing quirk that always gave her family something to smile about.

Those who knew Marvel will remember far more than what she did; they will remember how she made them feel. She was one of the sweetest souls many will ever know—gentle, loving, gracious, endlessly interested in others, and always proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She gave her love freely and completely, asking for little in return. In a world that often feels hurried, Marvel made people slow down, feel welcomed, and know they were deeply cared for.

Marvel was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice and Lillian Johnson; her brother, Robert (Mary) Johnson; her sister, Mardell (Russell) Ostlie; and her beloved husband, Loren, who passed away on June 30, 2025.

It seems almost fitting that Marvel passed away nearly one year to the day after Loren. We like to imagine he encouraged her to stay just one more year after he was gone—but she simply couldn't wait one more day to be reunited with the love of her life. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to enduring love, and while we miss them both beyond words, there is peace in knowing their remarkable love story continues together in eternity.

We will miss Marvel fiercely. We will miss her gentle hugs, her stories, her thoughtful questions, her encouraging words, her warm smile, and the way she made every family gathering feel like home. But above all, we will carry forward the love she gave so generously. Her legacy lives on in the family she adored, the students she taught, the friendships she nurtured, and the countless lives she quietly made better simply by being herself.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m., both at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Minnesota.

Though our hearts ache in her absence, we rejoice in knowing that Heaven has welcomed home a truly beautiful soul. Until we meet again, we will love you always.
