Michael "Mick" David Montag

August 10, 1952 — May 2, 2024

Kasota, MN

Mick Montag, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend was called home to be with our Lord on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, after unexpectedly passing away from a heart attack.

Memorial service will be held at Loyola Catholic High School, 145 Good Counsel Dr, Mankato, MN 56001, on Saturday, May 11th, 2024. Visitation will be from 12:30 pm-2 pm with the service to follow. Livestreaming will be available at www.mankatomortuary.com

Son of Mary Ann (Bjonerud) and Bill Montag, Mick was born on August 10th, 1952, in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He graduated from Loyola High School in 1970, Gustavus Adolphus College in 1974, and received his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Real Estate in 1991. Mick started his career at Lloyd Lumber Companies and worked in their construction division. He later formed Montag Development and also worked for a variety of companies, including Petrie Development Corporations, Quality Lumber of Mankato, and North West Cedar Products of Mankato. In 1983 and 1984, Mick developed the Huntington Hills Apartment Complex near Minnesota State University as well as Mayan Way Subdivisions. In the late 90s, Mick turned his attention to the assisted living business. His initial project was an assisted living community in North Mankato. He followed up with projects in Gaylord, Jordan, and Le Sueur, Minnesota.

In addition to his involvement with the Oak Terrace Senior Communities, he was the President of the Squirrels Nest Association at Lake Washington and served as Chairman of the Laguna Del Mar Condominium Association in the Grand Cayman Islands, with additional involvement as a board member in numerous other companies. Mick mentored many individuals in and around different business communities, offering advice whomever needed it.

Outside the office, Mick enjoyed playing, coaching, and watching all sports, especially those in which his children participated. Mick loved spending time on the water. Mick was an avid water skier and could be seen most mornings skiing on Lake Washington. He also spent much of his time in the winter months scuba diving, another one of his passions.

Mick was dedicated to his family, as well as his faith. As a member of FCA, he looked forward to his Friday Men's group, where he was able to continue to grow as a Christian until the end of his life.

Mick leaves behind a legacy of love and encouragement, which will be a continued inspiration to all who known him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lisa, of over 20 years; four children, John of Colorado, Thomas of Mankato, Lexi of Virginia, and Cahlin of South Carolina; one grandson, Tyler; four brothers; and two sisters. He was preceded in death by Donna Montag; and his parents, Mary Ann and Bill Montag.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Fellowship for Christian Athletes - FCA (℅ Bob Spieler, P.O Box 81, Mankato, MN 56002) or Jesus Food (711 Main Street, Good Thunder, MN 56037).
