Mikael “Mike” James Newton, age 21, of Mankato, died on Saturday, December 30, 2023 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 8, 2024 at the Northview – North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. A time of sharing memories will follow the service during the lunch. Mikael’s family encourages everyone to wear their favorite flannel. The service will be livestreamed and available below.

Mikael James, son of James "Jim" Newton and Lisa (Christopherson) Newton, was born on March 26, 2002 in Mankato. Mikael was a remarkable young man who lived his life passionately and left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him. He attended Mankato East High School, graduating in the year 2020. Following his education, Mikael pursued a fulfilling career as a welder at Pier Pleasure Inc.

Throughout his life, Mikael found joy in pursuing his many hobbies. He was an avid participant in MAHA youth hockey, showcasing his talent on the ice while forging lifelong friendships with fellow teammates. When he wasn't gliding across the ice, he found solace in the great outdoors - hunting and fishing became his gateway to tranquility. Additionally, Mikael had a deep love for music and could often be found strumming his guitar and going to concerts. His inquisitive spirit led him to tinker with various gadgets, showcasing his skillful hands and innovative ideas. Skiing and engaging in friendly competition on his Xbox were also sources of immense joy and entertainment for him.

Mikael’s lasting memory will forever remain in the hearts of his father, Jim Newton; mother, Lisa Newton; brother, Ethan Newton; grandpa, Doug (Patty) Christopherson; uncle, Allan (Tina) Christopherson; cousin, Colton Christopherson; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eugene and Marian Newton; grandma, Sandy Christopherson; and cousin, Teagan Christopherson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are preferred to the family.
