Rachelle “Shelly” Lynn Christ was called home by her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 13th while accompanied by her loved ones. She celebrated her 58th birthday the previous week.
Shelly attended Mankato public schools, excelling in all her classes, graduating with top honors. After high school she continued her education at South Central vocational School, once again graduating with honors and winning the prestigious Frank Kalin award for excellence.
Sought out by the school, Shelly returned to South Central in 1990 as an employee before moving on to Minnesota State University. She led many student workers over her time at MSU and loved helping them to succeed. Her student workers backgrounds were diverse, and she enjoyed hearing perspectives from their unique points of view.
Shelly possessed an unwavering faith with a smile through the last few months and was a disciple at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Mankato. Where she enjoyed attending the joyous services and volunteering.
Shelly married Dan Baker on November 19, 2004. The couple created a home full of love and laughter. No matter what they did – whether traveling to new destinations, flitting around Mankato events with her best friend and sister Amy, or soaking in the wildlife on her patio – she enjoyed each moment to the fullest. She cherished time with her animals, and often came up with silly nicknames for her many cats, and dog, Brook.
Shelly was an avid outdoorswoman. She spent many hours appreciating nature while fishing, hunting, or simple sunset boat tours. Her favorite outdoor activity was cross country skiing and walking through parks with her dog.
Laughter followed Shelly wherever she went. Her light heart and whit brought smiles to whoever she talked to. Her laugh was truly infectious. Those who knew Shelly probably envision her with a huge grin on her face as they read this.
Above all she was kindhearted and radiated positivity. From saving a stray kitten, to hosting student workers for a homemade meal, or volunteering with her beloved church – she was always thinking of others. She had a unique ability to make people feel special because she deeply cared about them.
Shelly is survived by her husband, Dan Baker; mother, Veronica “Ronnie” Christ; father, Stan (Rita) Christ; sister, Ronda (Joe) Leech; “Seestor”, Amy Ziegler (Scott Paulson); brother-in-law, Griff Baker; sister-in-law, Kelly (Dave) Hauch; mother-in-law/friend, Sue Baker. Her nieces and nephews were very special to her and are as follows: Andrew “AJ” (Jenna) Leech, Sarah (Paul) Thomas, Zachery “Grasshopper” (Emily) Leech, Brady Hauch, Haley (Joe) Ekhaml; great nieces: Nevaeh, Abry and Elly Leech and great nephews: Malachi Leech and Aiden Ekhaml.
Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 24 at 1:00 p.m. at Hosanna Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Thursday, June 23 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary and will continue Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.
