Wanda Mae (Schug) Schuneman, age 91, passed away August 18, 2026.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 11, 2026 at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Mankato with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, where she will join her husband, Richard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to BENCHS Humane Society, Echo Food Shelf or Hosanna Lutheran Church.
Wanda was born on October 3, 1934 in Lake City, Iowa to Ernest and Viola (Davis) Schug. She graduated from Westview High School in Lake City, Iowa. On August 26, 1956, she was united in marriage to Richard (Dick) Schuneman. They found their home in Mankato, MN. Wanda devoted her time and attention to caring for their three daughters, Tammy (Templin), Tracy (Beltz), and Tara Schuneman. When they were grown, she shifted gears to retail, spending 25 years between Hallmark and Herberger’s Department Store.
Wanda prioritized God and family above all things. She and Dick were founding members of Hosanna Lutheran church and remain so today. She loved Jesus, her three daughters, her two grandchildren (Christopher Templin and Brandy Templin), her sisters and many friends with all her heart. The pride of her life was her two grandchildren! She cherished every moment she spent with them. Wanda cared for others deeply. She demonstrated this by volunteering her time in a variety of ways, but she was most famously known for her cooking/baking skills. Others fondly referred to her as, “The Cookie Lady.” Christmases were filled with homemade candy and cookies which she freely gave to others. She genuinely had a heart of gold. She is undoubtedly hanging out in heaven baking cookies and playing cards with her sisters (something the Schug family loves to do!)
Dementia slowly took pieces of the woman we knew and loved, but never took away the love she gave our family or the memories she helped create. Watching someone you love with dementia is one of the hardest journeys a family can face. Our hearts go out to every family who has walked or is currently walking this path. It’s a unique kind of grief that many understand all too well. While our hearts are broken, we are grateful that she is finally at peace. We will remember her for the incredible woman she was before this disease and we will carry her love, laughter, and the lesson she gave us forever. Deeply loved, forever missed, never forgotten.
Wanda is survived by her daughters, Tammy Templin of Mankato, and Tracy (Greg) Beltz of Janesville; grandson, Christopher Templin of Lake Crystal; granddaughter, Brandy Templin (Bob Stevenson) of Lake Crystal; sister, Dee Ann (Dave) Pretty of Moorhead; brother-in-law, Donald (Jackie) Schuneman of Hartland; and nieces and nephews.
Wanda joins in heaven her parents, Ernest and Viola Schug; husband, Dick Schuneman; daughter, Tara Schuneman, and sisters, Betty Lou (Gene) Kolbe and Bonnie Schug.
