Wayne Salisbury Hughes

Wayne Hughes, age 83, of Lake Crystal, died on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at Crystal Seasons in Lake Crystal.

Memorial service will be held at a later date. Private family interment will be at Jerusalem Cemetery. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Wayne Salisbury Hughes was born January 2, 1940 to Hugh and Clara (Heckel) Hughes. He graduated from New Ulm High School in 1957. Wayne served 6 years with the New Ulm National Guard, he did his basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Wayne farmed the family farm his entire life. He married Joyce DeLeeuw on August 18, 1967. They lived on the family farm where they raised 3 children.

Wayne was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Crystal, where he was an Elder and a Deacon. He also sang in the church choir for most of his adult life. When Wayne wasn’t farming, you could find him singing with the Mankato Riverblenders and other local quartets including The Vocal Chords, The Four Sharps and Magic. He enjoyed delivering Singing Valentines with the Magic quartet. Wayne was a Barbershopper of the Year in 2000. After Wayne retired from farming he worked at RGIS.

Wayne is preceded in death by his father, Hugh Hughes; mother, Clara Hughes; and wife, Joyce Hughes. He is survived by his 3 children, Dave Hughes (Tanya Larson) of Lake Crystal, Judy (Steve) Smith of Lake Crystal, and James Hughes of Lake Crystal; grandchildren, William Hughes of New Ulm, Kaitlin Hughes of New Ulm, Gracie Snyder of Tennessee, and Alyssa Smith of Lake Crystal; great grandchildren, Tyson Hughes of New Ulm, Karson Schultz of New Ulm, Rhen Hughes of New Ulm, and Onyx Hughes of New Ulm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be donated to the charity of your choice.
